As Wayne and I headed home from the meat market on Saturday, we passed a pick-up truck parked along side the highway with a big hand-lettered sign propped up against it. "Plant City Strawberries" it read. Yum!
We were whizzing by too fast to stop then, and I didn't want a whole flat of strawberries right now anyway. But when I saw smaller containers of the red berries in the store, I quickly grabbed some. They were the finale to tonight's dinner. And a tasty finale at that...all red and juicy, sliced in a bowl with a little Cool Whip on top. Forget the sugar...I like the slightly tart taste of the berry with the sweet topping. Just talking about it makes me want another bowl.
I like knowing that this is just the start of good strawberry time. The ones from South Florida come first, obviously, but we'll have locally-grown strawberries available in a little while. Personally, I think they're better but maybe its because they're fresher since they don't have to travel very far. And after they're gone, Louisiana shares some of its bounty with us, too.
We're not big dessert eaters around here, but strawberries are the exception. I see plenty of red berries in our future...and that makes me happy.

Ahhh, yes, Louisiana does have some good strawberries. Yum!

I love, love, love strawberries! We just bought some at the store the other day.
I'm so mad at myself. I was cleaning out my "Bulk" e-mail, and I as I hit the "delete" button, I noticed there was a message from you!! Grrr...so, I never got it :( I'm totally bummed about that!
I also wanted to say that I'm glad your article is back in the CK March issue! I missed it the last few issues. Your style is clean and simple just like mine ;)
I hope you're having a good one!!
