We have a new produce market just down the road from us and the timing of their opening couldn't be better. Well, "new" in terms of a nice building and regular hours; they've sold stuff off and on from a flat bed trailer parked in the drive in summers past but now it's a full-fledged market. They clearly grow some of it themselves but I also think that being farmers themselves, they have an "in" with other growers in the area to stock their pretty new building. So far, everything we've bought has been good and you can't beat the convenience.
Saturday we picked up tomatoes that were fat and juicy. It's so nice to have tomatoes that really taste like tomatoes, not the poor excuse we've been forced to endure from the big box stores. They're not quite up to the standards of those we used to enjoy straight from Grandpa Arnall's garden but their pretty good.
And corn. Yum-O! We couldn't decide if we wanted white or yellow so we got some of both. They're picking it fresh every morning and it was sweet and delicious. I see more roasting ears in our dining future.
Last week we got snap beans and the biggest jalapenos you've ever seen. And there are local blueberries and squash too although those haven't found their way to our house yet. They're starting to get some Alabama peaches which I'm looking forward to but so far looking is all I've done on them. They're a little small and they don't have that luscious peach smell when you put them up to your nose. It's still early yet; there will be bigger, more sumptuous ones to come.
Never mind what the calendar says...if you don't believe summer is here, I've got the proof. And it came straight from the new produce market.
