I was forced to sew on a button today. No...it's really twice as bad; it was two buttons on two articles of clothing. This is newsworthy only because I hate mending.
I'm not a sewer. I made a stab at it early in my life, even constructing the dress I wore when Wayne and I got married, including umpteen bajillion hand-covered buttons that held it closed in the back. It's still hanging in the back of the closet. I made a few other things too but I wised up and left sewing behind; it frustrates me.
Patience isn't the issue. At one point some years ago counted cross-stitch was my creative outlet so I have an intimate familiarity with needles and colored thread. I could sit for hours counting rows and turning little "x's" into elaborate designs and be perfectly happy. Need a button sewn on a scrapbook page...or maybe a whole row of them? I'm your girl! I not frustrated at all sewing on layouts, either by hand or by machine. Scrapbooking is the whole reason why I even own a sewing machine. You should have heard me trying to explain that to the salesman at the fabric store who wanted to know what I intended to make so he could better advise me in my purchase when I went to buy it.
Put any other type of sewing project in front of me, however, and I'm a grump from the get-go. In my perfect world buttons would never come off or if they did, someone else would sew them back. What I'd really like to do is just abandon the buttonless article of clothing altogether but I'm too practical for that so I begrudgingly sew the run-away button back in its place. I do it but no one is going to make me like it.
I thought about that today as I wielded the needle and thread. I'm normally a pretty positive person; how could a little old button hold that much power over me? Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending upon your point of view), it doesn't take long to sew on a couple of buttons so I didn't come up with an answer. It's just a character flaw. I suppose we're lucky I'm only a reluctant mender and not a reluctant cook or clothes-washer. It would be a serious issue then.
Maybe I'll look into Velcro. I wonder if you can hot-glue a button to Velcro and have it hold up in the laundry? Something to think about.
