You do know, don't you, that Vermont is on the way home to Florida when leaving Ohio? Well, it is if you're riding with us. We took a very convoluted route home but that's OK; we were treasure hunting.
The most compelling treasure was for my better half to find caches in a few new states. In the world of geocaching, they not only keep up with how many caches you find but also where you found them. I kid Wayne and tell him it's like earning merit badges for grown-ups so we added a few to his virtual sash.
But I was into treasure too...Mother Nature's treasure in the form of colorful trees. There are a lot of positives to living where we do but the lack of fall color is one of the negatives and I miss it. So while he was trying to figure out how far and which way it was to the next cache, I was looking for scenic places to stop and take a photo.
Sometimes it was a pretty landscape that caught our eye as we drove by, like the river in the first photo, but there were times too when there were vibrant reds and oranges right where we stopped. Wayne found one of his caches along that guardrail you see on the left of the photo.
I had hoped for the picturesque scene with a little white church with its steeple breaking through trees ablaze in their fall glory but that never materialized. We hit a few pockets of really good color but we had our share of mostly bare trees too. Perhaps the unpredictability of gorgeous fall colors is what makes us appreciate them more.
We found another kind of treasure too...an authentic Italian bakery full of the most amazing array of treats you can imagine. Long rows of bakery cases covered three sides of the room and they were full of donuts, danishes, cakes and every other kind of sugary delight you can think of. Good thing there was a line because it took us a while to decide what we wanted. Well, we really wanted one of each offering but that would be ridiculous. Delicious but ridiculous. That giant bear claw you see in the back left corner of the box was bigger than Wayne's hand with all his fingers extended but it was so yummy. A cider donut and chocolate cream puff might have been my breakfast on this morning...but who's telling. What happens on vacation stays on vacation...right? Besides, a body needs a little something extra for treasure hunting, be it caches or pretty leaves.
Sometimes the road home needs not to be so direct so you can see new things and enjoy new experiences. Those are treasures in and of themselves...and you didn't even have to hunt for them.
