We don't normally make a big deal out of birthdays in our house so it was a fun change of pace to be celebrating Wayne's this year. And we're always happy to have an excuse for family to come spend extra time with us.
Kayla made the trip all by herself this time. It was her first solo but she's driven it numerous times before so it wasn't like she needed a map. She had planned to bring a certain young man with her but he came down with the flu on Friday. We kidded her that perhaps he was just concerned about the cross-examination he might endure from her dad and grandpa but she assured us his illness was genuine. One of her jobs at family dinners is folding the napkins into stand-up cones.
The ham was tasty, the scalloped potatoes sinful and we all ate too much but enjoyed every bite. When Wayne couldn't decide on what he wanted in terms of a cake, I suggested we just hit the cupcake shop and get a variety. Here was the result in a photo that could have used a different lens:
Looking past the blurs and clockwise from the chocolate frosted one at the back, they were Chocolate-Covered Strawberry, Reece's Cup, Red Velvet, Salted Caramel, White Chocolate Raspberry and Dalmatian (chocolate with a cream cheese filling). Choosing one was hard but we all thought our choices were delicious.
The guys automatically put Kayla in the middle when I asked for a photo of the three of them together. It's not hard to tell she's the apple of both their eyes. She's pretty special in Grandma's book too, but then these are the three people closest to my heart anyway.
Maybe we need to reconsider this birthday thing. A family celebration might not be such a bad thing after all.
